Journey (by Two App Studio) is one of the few journals that genuinely runs everywhere — iOS, Android, web, desktop — with mood tracking, guided coach programs written by humans, and an optional AI called Odyssey that lets you chat with your journal. To Journey's credit, the privacy paperwork is real: their policy states users are opted out of Odyssey AI by default and that they "do not employ users' personal data for training language model" (policy updated May 2024, checked July 2026). What the marketing doesn't lead with is the architectural trade-off, which their own help center documents: enabling end-to-end encryption disables Odyssey AI and search, because encrypted entries can't be indexed or sent to a model. You choose: AI features or E2EE, not both.

When Journey is the better choice

You want native apps on every platform: Journey ships real desktop and mobile apps, not just a web wrapper. If you want a native journal on both an Android phone and a Windows PC, Journey is one of the few serious options.
You actually want to chat with your journal: Odyssey AI is implemented more carefully than most: off by default, explicit consent flow, and a written no-training commitment. If an AI that answers questions about your own past entries appeals to you, Journey does it with better paperwork than almost anyone.

The trade-off Journey's own docs admit

Journey's help center is refreshingly direct: end-to-end encryption "prevents Journey from indexing your journal entries," so search and Odyssey AI are unavailable on encrypted journals (per their help articles, checked July 2026). That's not a Journey flaw — it's the same physics every journaling app faces. A server-side AI can only read entries the server can decrypt.
